But there is an antidote to fatigue and its impact on competence. Not surprisingly, it’s rest. Among 16 potential daily activities — including eating, praying, relaxing and exercising — napping had far and away the biggest impact on reducing fatigue.
For all that, capacity is something most of us have long taken for granted, mostly because we sensed we had enough and assumed there was always more where that came from. It’s the same way we’ve long treated the resources of the planet, which as a consequence are now imperiled.
I felt justified in taking time off — and providing it to others — because it fueled productivity. What never occurred to me was that taking time off might be something worth doing for its own sake, and as part of a more nourishing life.
Remember how Bon Jovi put it? “Gonna live while I’m alive, I’ll sleep when I’m dead.” Here’s my version: “Gonna thrive while I’m alive, I’ll sleep so I’m ahead.”
