The current reality:
Research shows that uncertainty about a negative outcome causes more stress than the negative outcome itself. Unfortunately, uncertainty is a fact of life in the current environment, whether it’s about our health, family responsibilities, of our professional lives. Constantly changing demands and expectations, on and off the job, create high levels of stress and overwhelm. The consequence is increasing rates of anxiety, despair and burnout which undermine productivity, collaboration and sound decision-making.
What fuels better
One of our core resilience principles is something we’ve named ‘The Energy Serenity Prayer’: “Invest your energy in what you have the power to influence. Don’t squander your energy in what you can’t control. Have the wisdom to know the difference.” By systematically turning our attention to what falls within our sphere of control – most of all how we respond in any situation -- we can invest our energy more intentionally and efficiently.
Our work to help support employees facing uncertainty includes:
- Conducting a personal energy audit to deepen self-awareness and identify the vast set of internal resources that remain untapped or underutilized.
- Helping them to recognize how they’re feeling in any given moment, and what it takes to cultivate the emotions that serve them best
- Reframing their outlook by teaching them to identify the facts in any given circumstance, and then distinguishing them from the selectively negative stories we tend to tell ourselves when we’re under pressure.
- Cultivating empowerment by sharing a clear framework and process by which they can make changes that last, even in the face of the internal and external resistance that so often arises.
